Go Where You Are Needed

Last week I attended the 2017 Sigma Alpha National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. I made the commitment to attend for the primary purpose of running for the Communications Director position on the National Sorority Board. Guess what? I lost.

I won't lie and say I'm not disappointed by the outcome, but it taught me a few things in a very short period of time that still have me overwhelmed and grateful.

I am humbled by the number of women who spoke on my behalf without ever being asked.

If you were among those women whose lives I have touched, please know that you have truly humbled me to know that my love of connecting with sisters on social media means something to you. When you saw the tears in my eyes following the announcement of my loss, you should know it wasn't because I lost, but it was because I was told about your support and love.

Never could I have ever imagined that I was making such an impact on so many when all I had ever intended was to share my love of agriculture with my social media platforms and connect with those who shared my passion.

They aren't lying when they say when one door closes another one opens.

Immediately following the end of the election I was approached by the Sigma Alpha Sorority Educational Foundation with the hope that I would agree to assisting them with their own communications strategy. It caught me completely off-guard to realize that I never really lost at all- I was just presented an opportunity that I hadn't expected.

So, I made the decision to go where I was needed, and I look forward to this newfound opportunity to serve the sorority in a way that had never crossed my mind. It will certainly be an adventure as I assist the Sigma Alpha Foundation with their communications strategy by providing my talents in a place where they are needed most.

Megan was elected to serve as the Treasurer on the National Sorority Board, and will serve on the Sigma Alpha Sorority Educational Foundation with me as the Foundation's Alumni Director.

While I went into last week with one set of goals, I am entering this new week with an entirely different set of goals. Life has a funny way of throwing your best laid plans to the side and pushing you to go where you are needed.

We always have to remember to be flexible and to be prepared to change our plans, even if it isn't where we intended for ourselves to end up.
