Speaking Social Media To Environmental Stewardship Winners
"Tell your story."
I know we've all heard that at least once in the agriculture industry, but nobody ever really tells you how or where to tell your story. Or, if they tell you where, they usually leave it as "just get on social media."
What agricultural communicators usually neglect to tell you is how to craft posts that tell stories that people actually want to hear and how to connect with those people that you want to reach. After all, most people are already on Facebook, and they may already be sharing their story, but usually that story is only reaching their inner circle with their friends and family.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak to the 2018 Environmental Stewardship Award Program regional winners about just that- how they can use social media to share their story, and how to craft posts that are more than just pretty photos with one-liners that only scratch the surface of the stories we need to be telling in agriculture.
While the crowd was on the older side (I was hands-down the youngest person in the room), they seemed open to the idea of learning how to use Instagram.
While this may have been my first paid speaking gig (only paid because it was through my role with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association), I am always open to speaking about how best to use social media to become a storyteller instead of a salesman.
